What Happens If I Lose My Wallet or Backup?

Modified on Mon, 29 Sep at 9:08 AM

Why This Matters

Unlike a custodial wallet where Wallet of Satoshi can help restore access, in self-custody you are the only one who controls your Bitcoin. That means if your wallet or backup is lost, there are serious consequences.

If You Lose Your Device

  • If you still have your backup (Google Drive backup or 12-word recovery phrase), you can easily restore your wallet on a new phone.

  • If you don’t have a backup, your funds are permanently lost. There is no way for anyone - including Wallet of Satoshi - to recover them.

If You Lose Your Backup

  • Your wallet may still work on your current phone.

  • But if you ever delete the app, reset your phone, or lose the device, you won’t be able to restore your wallet.

  • This means your funds are at risk until you create a new backup.

If Someone Else Gets Your Backup

  • Anyone with access to your recovery phrase can restore your wallet on their own device and spend your Bitcoin.

  • Wallet of Satoshi cannot block or reverse these transactions.

How to Stay Safe

  1. Always create a backup when setting up your wallet.

  2. Keep your backup private and secure - never share it with anyone.

  3. Test restoring your wallet on another device if you want peace of mind.

  4. Update your backup if you change devices or backup methods.
