Keeping Your Recovery Phrase Secure – Storage Tips and What to Avoid

Modified on Wed, 13 Aug at 1:12 PM

Why Your Recovery Phrase Matters

Your recovery phrase is a unique set of 12 words that gives full access to your Bitcoin.

Anyone who has it can spend your funds. If you lose it, there’s no way to recover your wallet.

In short: Your recovery phrase = your Bitcoin.

Best Practices for Storage

  1. Write It Down on Paper

    • Use pen and paper, not digital notes.

    • Keep it somewhere private and safe.

  2. Make Multiple Backups

    • Store copies in different secure locations (e.g., home safe + safety deposit box).

  3. Protect from Damage

    • Consider using a metal backup plate to protect against fire, water, and wear.

  4. Keep It Offline

    • Don't store your recovery phrase in email or text files.

  5. Limit Who Knows About It

    • Only you (and people you absolutely trust in emergencies) should have access.

What to Avoid

  • No Screenshots - easy to steal if your phone or cloud is hacked.

  • No Photos - same risks as screenshots.

  • No Sharing - not with friends, not with family, not with us.

Periodic Checks

  • Every 6-12 months, check your backups are still safe, readable, and in good condition.

  • If your storage location changes (e.g., moving house), update your backup plan immediately.

✅ Quick Reminder

If someone gets your recovery phrase, they have full control of your Bitcoin.

If you lose it, your Bitcoin is gone forever. Treat it like the most valuable item you own.
